The hectic Autumn release season has begun, and September is by far and away the busiest month of the year so far. Juggernauts such as Gears of War 3, FIFA 12 and F1 2011 finally land on shelves, not to mention anticipated newcomers such as Dead Island and El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. Even the 'other releases' section is packed to the gills with HD remakes worthy of your cash.
Driver: San Francisco

After several delays from 2010 comes the long-awaited return of the Driver franchise. It treads new ground, too; after being injured from the last game, Tanner plays out the adventure from within a coma, possessing cars that roam around the streets. The bizarre set-up also paves the way for some interesting mechanics and multiplayer, with players scrambling to jump into the best cars before everyone else.
Bodycount

From the creator of last-generation shooter Black, Bodycount features extensive environmental destruction and powerful weaponry across multiple game modes. As well as co-operative and competitive online multiplayer, the campaign will see players become an assassin on behalf of the mysterious Network
Madden NFL 12

The latest edition of the yearly American Football franchise introduces a new collision system and AI overhauls, which offer improved zone and man coverage. Elsewhere, teams will now be presented with their own cheerleaders and mascots where available, and the Franchise mode has been expanded to offer more rosters, hot and cold streaks throughout a season, and a bidding process when competing against other general managers as a free agent.
Dead Island
Release date: September 6 (North America), September 9 (Europe)

This open-world action title is a blend of Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising. Trapped on a zombie-filled tropical paradise, you must work your way across the island with your fellow survivors to safe houses and to help others undertake missions. As well as on-going ability upgrades and a weapon creation system, up to four players can jump into a campaign with drop-in drop-out co-operative multiplayer.
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
Release date: August 16 (North America), September 9 (Europe)

Developed by Ignition's Japanese studio, headed by Devil May Cry and Okami mastermind Sawaki Takeyasu, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is based on the events depicted in the Old Testament book of Enoch, and follows Enoch's quest to return the souls of seven renegade angels to Heaven. It's a God of War style action-adventure at heart, but with a unique weapon system and jaw-dropping visual presentation.
Resistance 3
Release date: September 6 (North America), September 9 (Europe)
Platforms: PlayStation 3
The latest entry in the Insomniac Games-developed franchise takes a different tone from previous instalments. Set away from the action-paced frontline and into the American midwest, you play a regular civilian fighting the alien invasion. Resistance 3 also supports PlayStation Move and SharpShooter control schemes.
Rise of Nightmares

Now for something a little more mature for Kinect; from the House of the Dead team comes Rise of Nightmares, which sees players explore a creepy castle in Eastern Europe populated by the undead and a whole host of nightmarish creatures. Moving through the castle is free-roaming, while first-person combat involves punches and kicks with some strong hit detection, and you can expect a few puzzles thrown in with a dark twist, such as reaching into a blood-filled toilet to find a key.
Gears of War 3
Release date: September 20 (Worldwide)

Gears of War 3 is the final part of the best-selling Xbox 360 shooter trilogy. As well as a campaign that concludes Marcus's story and humanity's fight against the Locust, multiplayer returns better than ever with dedicated servers and an all-new Beast mode. Elsewhere, Horde 2.0 is given an update with all-new features such as turrets and barriers.
F1 2011
Release date: September 20 (North America), September 23 (Europe)

After the BAFTA award-winning entry in 2010, Codemasters ups the ante with a host of new features. The championship becomes more realistic with the addition of mechanical failures and the safety car, while two players can work together in the same team with an online campaign.
FIFA 12

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, DS, PSP
FIFA returns with one of its biggest overhauls in years; the Player Impact Engine allows for more realistic reactions to tackles, from subtle nudges to full blown tackles, as well as tussling and jostling with other players when off the ball.
